Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has tapped a close confidant , advisor and long time friend to be the state’s interim United States Senator.   William “ Mo” Cowan  will temporarily replace John Kerry until a special election is held later this year.

Gov. Patrick Sets June 25 For Special Senate Election

With Senator John Kerry’s resignation taking effect Friday, and an interim appointee named, the field is taking shape  for the special senate election in Massachusetts.

The special election scheduled for June 25th will be the third time since January 2010 that Massachusetts voters trek to the polls to pick a US Senator.   The new campaign is launching just a couple of months after Massachusetts voters settled the most expensive race in the nation between then incumbent Republican Senator Scott Brown and now Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Mass. gov. picks ex-aide Cowan as interim senator

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has tapped his former chief-of-staff William "Mo" Cowan to serve as interim U.S. senator until a special election to fill the seat left vacant by Secretary of State-designate John Kerry.

Patrick says Cowan's role in helping turn around the Massachusetts economy in recent years "has earned him the respect and admiration of people throughout government." He says the state will benefit from Cowan's wisdom and good judgment.

BOSTON (AP) — GOP officials close to Scott Brown report that the former Republican senator is "leaning strongly toward running" in the special election to replace Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.

They report that Brown is likely to enter the race early next week. The officials spoke Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to share internal discussions.
