Comptroller: Conn. Faces $40 Million Deficit

Connecticut's comptroller says the state is on track to end the fiscal year with a budget deficit of $40 million.

The estimate released Wednesday by Comptroller Kevin Lembo reflects cuts that were made last month after officials revealed a $365 million deficit in the current $20 billion state budget.

Gov. Malloy Announces $170 in Conn. Budget Cuts

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is unveiling $170 million in spending reductions across state agencies, the first part of a plan to close Connecticut's current $365 million budget shortfall.

The Democrat released the list Wednesday. It includes nearly $161 million worth of reductions to executive branch agencies that range from a $33,957 cut to the governor's office to a $32.2 million reduction at the Department of Social Services.

Conn. Governor Expects Sandy Aid Applicantions to Surpass Irene's

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says he expects the number of applications from Connecticut businesses and homeowners for federal disaster assistance following Superstorm Sandy will surpass those filed after last year's Tropical Storm Irene.

During a conference call Friday, he said 948 businesses and 3,832 homeowners have already applied for financial help. That's compared with 1,321 businesses and 5,654 homeowners filing applications over a long period of time following Irene.

Conn. governor says raises hurt regents board's credibility

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says the credibility of the central office of the Board of Regents for Higher Education for the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system has been damaged by a flap over unauthorized pay raises.

Malloy said Thursday the board needs to conduct a review of what he calls "serious problems" and take appropriate steps.

Governor of Connecticut to Visit China

The Governor of Connecticut says he's accepted an invitation to participate in the World Economic Forum Summit being held in Tianjin, China.

Governor Dannel P. Malloy said Thursday he will be the state's first governor to travel to China since former Gov. William O'Neill in 1987. Malloy will be joined by Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Catherine Smith.
