Schenectady woman charged in death of grandson, 8

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 43-year-old old woman has been charged with beating her 8-year-old grandson repeatedly over a prolonged period, eventually leading to his death.

Gloria Nelligan of Schenectady was arraigned in city court on a manslaughter charge Monday and ordered held without bail.

Police say Sha'hiim Nelligan was found unresponsive by family members in their Schenectady home Saturday morning. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. Gloria Nelligan was his legal guardian.

NY college cancels men's soccer season over hazing

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — The men's soccer team at an upstate New York college has had its spring season cancelled after school officials said players were involved in hazing during a party last November.

Officials at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs announced Thursday that 24 players and four other students were disciplined for participating in an initiation known as "rookie night." Details of the hazing haven't been released.

New Law Would Help Police Track Parolees

Police in the city of Troy may soon get a bit of "enforcement assistance" with a new local law that supporters say would help control crime.  

Troy's City Council has been discussing creating a registration program for parolees that would require individuals fresh out of prison who take up residence in town to register with the Chief of Police.
