Internships in Public Radio Provide Valuable Experience

WAMC/Northeast Public Radio is currently looking for spring, summer and fall interns. WAMC has room for up to 9 interns in our Administrative, News and National Productions Departments. Interns work 15-40 hours/week, depending on course requirements, for academic credit. Intern opportunities are as follows:

National Productions Internships

Our National Productions Department is comprised of 5 nationally syndicated, subject specific programs.WAMC is looking for motivated students to work with the National Productions staff in the following areas:

Women's Issues

51% is our weekly show that takes a serious and intelligent look at society's impact on women and their impact on society. Students will be working with Producer/Host, Julia Taylor.

Health

The Health Show explores breakthroughs and news in the health fields. Students will be working with Producer/Host, Bob Barrett.

Education

The Best of Our Knowledge is a weekly half-hour show that brings listeners an understanding of the important events taking place in the academic world. Students will be working with Producer, Glenn Busby.

Newsroom Interns

Newsroom interns focus on regional news. They work with the newsroom staff on daily features in a high pressure, exciting (but fun) environment. Applying students do not need radio experience or production skills. As production assistants, they will learn to research and write new stories, conduct and tape interviews, tape phone feeds, and learn to use production equipment. Students may wish to submit writing samples.

Roundtable Interns

The Roundtable is WAMC's 3 hour Mon-Fri arts, news, and culture program, featuring hosts Julia Taylor and Joe Donahue. You will work with the Roundtable’s producers Andy Clegg and Sarah LaDuke to research and edit segments, book future interviews, produce live on-location broadcasts, and answer listener questions. While there are additional administrative tasks associated with the Roundtable, this is a fast paced, hands-on internship. No previous production skills are needed – just solid writing and organizational skills and an eagerness to learn about radio. Please submit a writing sample and a cover letter with your resume.

Underwriting and Marketing Interns

The Underwriting Department offers you the opportunity to learn a wide variety of skills that involve the creative and hands-on learning of sales, media tools, and public relations. This internship involves managing the components of all collateral sales tools, use of database marketing, assisting the underwriting representatives to prospect and increase station business. You will also be involved in all new projects from start to finish, lay-out and ad design. A hands on experience.

Administrative/Development Interns

WAMC also needs Administrative Interns in our front office to support the staff with membership coordination, fund-raising, and the program guide. Students could be involved with some of the following projects:

writing articles or press releases; entering program listings into the computer; developing premiums and giveaways for the on-air fund drives; assisting in the coordination of volunteer activities; assisting with the marketing of WAMC National Productions; working with program guide staff; and, ascertaining community needs.

We are always looking for full-time interns, but are more than willing to work around any student's limited schedule. We will also consider designing an independent study project targeted to a student's particular area of interest.

Note: Students should treat internships as a professional job opening. Proper attire and resume, or completed application, are required during an interview. News and National Productions interns will want to provide writing samples, if available.

Interested students should contact David Guistina at 1-800-323-9262, ext. 172 for more information, or to schedule an interview.
