For nearly three decades, NPR's Morning Edition has prepared listeners for the day ahead with two hours of up-to-the-minute news, background analysis, commentary, and coverage of arts and sports. With nearly 14 million listeners, Morning Edition draws public radio's largest audience.

One of the most respected news magazines in the world, Morning Edition airs Monday through Friday on more than 660 NPR stations across the United States, and around the globe on NPR's international services.

Its cast of regulars includes some of the most familiar voices on radio: correspondent Susan Stamberg; commentator Frank Deford; news analysts Cokie Roberts and Juan Williams; and newscasters Jean Cochran and Carl Kasell.

Produced by NPR in Washington, D.C., Morning Edition draws on reporting from correspondents based in 17 countries around the world, and producers and reporters in 17 locations in the U.S. Their reporting is supplemented by NPR member station reporters across the country and a strong corps of independent producers and reporters in the public radio system.

Since its debut in 1979, Morning Edition has garnered broadcasting's highest honors — including the George Foster Peabody Award and the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award.

Grandfathers Go To The Mat For Gymnast Grandson

As fans around the world are riveted to the 2012 Summer Games in London, one young gymnast already has his sights on 2016.

Albuquerque, N.M., native C.J. Maestas, 20, has been tumbling his entire life. A self-described "hyper" kid who loved to climb on things, C.J. joined his first gymnastics class when he was 18 months old.

"As a little baby, you were always jumping," C.J.'s grandfather Frank Maestas recalls.

Michelle Obama In New Hampshire

LACONIA, N.H.—First Lady Michelle Obama will make a series of New Hampshire campaign stops as she rallies support for the President.

Mrs. Obama plans to attend a fundraiser in Holderness early Thursday afternoon and then make public appearances at Laconia Middle School at 3 p.m. and at the field house at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester at 5:15 p.m.  The First Lady's events in Laconia and Manchester are free and open to the public. Tickets are required due to limited space, and will be available to the public on a first come, first serve basis.

NY DNA Program Takes Effect

Changes intended to include more people in New York's DNA database of criminals has taken effect.

New York is now collecting DNA samples from everyone convicted of a felony or penal misdemeanor.

The so-called "all-crimes DNA" program was authorized in a law earlier this year.

The measure that took effect Wednesday will roughly double the collections that are made with saliva swabs, previously from all felons and people convicted of 36 misdemeanors.

Allison Schmitt rallied from behind on the anchor leg to lead the United States to the gold medal in the women's 4x200 freestyle relay at the Olympics. The Americans posted an Olympic record time of 7 minutes, 42.92 seconds. Schmitt entered the water about a half second behind, but pulled ahead on her first return lap to a win. Teen sensation Missy Franklin got things started for the U.S., followed by Dana Vollmer, Shannon Vreeland and then Schmitt. Australia settled for the silver, France won the bronze.

Fire Engulfs Columbia County

A spectacular fire in Columbia County Wednesday night forced the evacuation of residents living near TCI Industries at 39 Falls Industry Park in West Ghent.

Fire broke out at the building around 10:30 p.m. The company dismantles transformers. Thick heavy smoke pouring from the roof was seen by firefighters when they arrived.
