For nearly three decades, NPR's Morning Edition has prepared listeners for the day ahead with two hours of up-to-the-minute news, background analysis, commentary, and coverage of arts and sports. With nearly 14 million listeners, Morning Edition draws public radio's largest audience.

One of the most respected news magazines in the world, Morning Edition airs Monday through Friday on more than 660 NPR stations across the United States, and around the globe on NPR's international services.

Its cast of regulars includes some of the most familiar voices on radio: correspondent Susan Stamberg; commentator Frank Deford; news analysts Cokie Roberts and Juan Williams; and newscasters Jean Cochran and Carl Kasell.

Produced by NPR in Washington, D.C., Morning Edition draws on reporting from correspondents based in 17 countries around the world, and producers and reporters in 17 locations in the U.S. Their reporting is supplemented by NPR member station reporters across the country and a strong corps of independent producers and reporters in the public radio system.

Since its debut in 1979, Morning Edition has garnered broadcasting's highest honors — including the George Foster Peabody Award and the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award.

As U.S. embassies and consulates face protests in the Muslim world over an anti-Islamic film, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is walking a fine line. She is distancing herself and the State Department from the video that has sparked anger among Muslims, but stressed the US commitment to free speech.

"To us, to me personally, this video is disgusting and reprehensible," she said Thursday in Washington, D.C. "It appears to have a deeply cynical purpose: to denigrate a great religion and to provoke rage."

Governor Patrick Meets with District Attorneys About Crime Lab

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is pushing his administration to move forward in collecting information related to potentially mishandled evidence at the state police drug lab in Jamaica Plain.

Patrick met with members of the Massachusetts District Attorneys Association Wednesday afternoon to discuss the investigation and to urge their cooperation in working with defense attorneys and the judicial system. Health and Human Services Secretary JudyAnn Bigby and Department of Public Safety and Security Secretary Mary Elizabeth Heffernan also sat in on the meeting.

New York Primary Elections Take Place Around State

Voters across New York state are headed to the polls today for state and local primary elections. 

Polls opened at 6 this morning in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam and Erie Counties, and will remain open until 9. Voting begins at noon in all other counties.

Republican State Senator Roy MacDonald is hoping to hold off a challenge from Saratoga County Clerk Kathy Marchione in the 43rd district, a race MacDonald likely would not be running if not for his aisle-crossing vote for same-sex marriage last year.

Gas Prices Climb at Record Pace

 In the last three days alone, gas prices in the Middletown area rose 15 cents, to well over $4.  How much more they will rise is an unknown. They are increasing at comparative levels across the Mid-Hudson and Catskills regions.

The economy may be showing signs of recovery with increased home sales, but the skyrocketing gas prices put that growth at risk, said Orange County Chamber of Commerce President John D’Ambrosio.

In the NL, The Washington Nationals blanked New York 2-0 to take 14 of 18 from the Mets in the season series. The hottest team in baseball right now is the Philadelphia Phillies. The five-time defending National League East champions just hope it's not too late to salvage their season. Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer and Cliff Lee pitched seven strong innings to lead the streaking Philadelphia Phillies to their seventh straight win, 3-1 and a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins. The win moves the surging Phillies within three games of the final NL wild card berth
