 What is a podcast?

A podcast is a way to download the latest programs and news to your computer - automatically. You will need free software to choose the podcasts you want to grab. Once installed, your program will automatically download updated content via the internet. You can subscribe to as many podcast feeds as you like. You can then listen to the podcast whenever you want from your computer or a portable media player.

What happens when I subscribe to a podcast?
When you subscribe to a podcast, all new shows will be automatically downloaded to your computer as they are published. Using the links on this page, you can add the podcast to your Google, Yahoo, or MSN homepage, or subscribe through iTunes. You then have the option of listening to the broadcast from your computer, or you can transfer it to your portable MP3 player, such as an iPod, for listening on the go.

How do I subscribe to a podcast?
In order to listen to your favorite podcasts on your computer or audio device, you must first subscribe to it. Subscribing to a podcast is a very simple process of telling an audio player or feed reader where the file is located and it will download the audio tracks (podcasts) when they are published to the Internet.

The list of available WAMC podcasts are listed below. To subscribe, simply click on the podcast name and choose which method (iTunes, Google, or Yahoo) you would like to use.

The following is the process of subscribing to podcasts using iTunes. If you are using a different audio program, the process is very similar, but you should check the help files or the website for that product for more information.

1. Open iTunes
2. Click "Advanced" and then "Subscribe to Podcast...". A box will then appear where you can enter the address of the podcast you wish to subscribe to. In this case we will be entering the address for the Vox Pop podcast (http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/wamc/.jukebox?action=viewPodcast&podcastId=299). Click "OK" to complete the subscription. Your new podcast will then appear in the "podcast" section of iTunes and will show you the most recent files to download. You can download the podcasts and then sync them to your portable audio device or phone or just listen on your computer. Once a new audio file is posted to the Internet, it will be downloaded to your computer.

In order to find the address of the podcast xml file, you can right-click (Ctrl + click on Mac) on the podcast name and choose "Copy Link Address" (Firefox) or "Copy Shortcut" (Internet Explorer)

You can also subscribe to podcasts using the iTunes Store. To do this click on "iTunes Store" on the left side of the iTunes screen. This will take you to the store where you can purchase music, movies, TV shows, books, and of course, subscribe to podcasts. To find WAMC podcasts on the iTunes Store, enter "WAMC" in the search bar.
