One of the candidates seeking the Democratic nomination to run for governor of Vermont kicked off his campaign with an event in Barre Tuesday.

James Ehlers, of Winooski, the executive director of the environmental group Lake Champlain International, launched his "people-first campaign" at the Old Labor Hall in Barre.

Ehlers is seeking the Democratic nomination in the August primary to run for governor along with former utility executive Christine Hallquist and Bristol eighth-grader Ethan Sonneborn, who is taking advantage of the quirk in Vermont law that does not require gubernatorial candidates to be registered voters.

Republican Governor Phil Scott is expected to seek re-election.

Ehlers says he will push for fair wages, a healthy and clean environment, paid family leave, quality education and job training, and access to health care.
