Vermont Senate Unanimously Approves Gun Removal Proposal

The Vermont Senate has unanimously approved a proposal that would allow police to take firearms and explosives from people judged to be an extreme risk to themselves or others.
Under the proposal approved Wednesday, a police officer would need to get an order from a judge before seizing any firearms.

It doesn't go as far as a bill passed by the Vermont House last year that would allow police to remove firearms in certain cases without a judge's order. It is unclear how, or if, the bills will be reconciled.

Historically, Vermont has been resistant to gun restrictions, but last week, Republican Governor Phil Scott said he was open to the idea after a teenager was arrested and charged with plotting a Vermont school shooting.
