Vermont Seeks Extension of FEMA Deadline

Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin is asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency for an extension to the deadline to seek a federal disaster declaration for last month's snow storm that caused more than 130,000 power outages.

State officials say they need more time due to the extent of the damage. Shumlin has asked that the deadline be extended to Jan. 28.

Vermont Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security Director Joe Flynn said Friday that officials know that the state total for damage is far greater than the $1 million required for a declaration. But he says they've found that the damage has been spread over at least 12 of Vermont's 14 counties and inspecting and verifying that damage will take more time.

Flynn is confident FEMA with agree.
