Vermont Moving Social Workers From Building Where Colleague Killed

Pat Bradley/WAMC

The state of Vermont is planning to move about 30 social workers from the Barre office where a colleague was shot to death last summer to a nearby courthouse with better security.
Administration Secretary Justin Johnson said Friday he met with the social workers from the office of the Department for Children and Families and they were supportive of the move.

Johnson says many of the social workers have bad memories of the building.

On Aug. 7 social worker Lara Sobel was shot to death outside the building while leaving work. The woman charged with killing Sobel, Jody Herring, believed Sobel caused her to lose custody of her 9-year-old daughter. Herring is also charged with killing three relatives.

The union that represents state workers says it's pleased with the move.
