Two Correction Officers Convicted Of Beating, Cover-Up

WikiMedia Commons

Two former New York state correction officers have been convicted of beating an inmate at a correctional facility in Fishkill and falsifying records.

Kathy Scott of Saugerties and George Santiago of Fremont Center were convicted Monday of the November 2013 beating of then 54-year-old Kevin Moore, an inmate at the Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill. Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon Kim said Scott and Santiago also were convicted of falsifying records to cover up the beating.  Kim said Scott and Santiago assaulted Moore in violation of his constitutional rights by repeatedly punching and kicking him as he lay on the floor.  The injuries caused Moore to be hospitalized for two weeks with facial bone fractures, five broken ribs and a collapsed lung. Three other former Downstate correction officers previously pleaded guilty to the same offenses.
