Think Tank Paints Dreary Vermont Jobs Picture

A Montpelier think tank has taken to putting out its own monthly interpretation of Vermont's jobs picture, and this month's report from the Public Assets Institute paints it as bleak.

The Vermont Department of Labor reported a 3.7 percent unemployment rate for October on Friday — unchanged from September and eighth-lowest in the country.

But the Public Assets Institute says the number of Vermonters working slid to its lowest point since 2003.

Labor Commissioner Annie Noonan says the labor market is tightening, as more Baby Boomers move toward retirement. She says many Vermont employers are looking to hire, and are having trouble filling their vacancies.
