MLB

Rookie Victor Reyes hit his first major league home run, doubled twice and singled, leading the Detroit Tigers over the New York Yankees 11-7.

The Yankees began the day 7 1/2 games behind Boston in the AL East and finished 3-4 on their homestand against Detroit and the Chicago White Sox, both far below-.500 teams.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone served a one-game suspension for nicking an umpire with his cap during an animated argument Friday night. Bench coach Josh Bard filled in for Boone.

The Yanks travel to California to take on the Athletics Monday at 4:00 p.m.

In other MLB games:

Stephen Piscotty homered twice and drove in five runs as the Oakland Athletics widened their lead over Seattle for the second AL wild-card spot by beating the Mariners 8-2. The A's moved 5 1/2 games ahead of Seattle for the wild-card slot.

George Springer hit a two-run homer and finished a triple shy of the cycle to lead the Houston Astros to a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels in Shohei Ohtani's return to the mound. Ohtani lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his first time pitching since June 6 because of an elbow strain. Both of the hits he allowed were to Springer — a leadoff single and his two-run shot in the third that made it 2-0.

Rookie Brandon Lowe homered and drove in three runs, and the Tampa Bay Rays hung on in the ninth inning to defeat the Cleveland Indians 6-4, taking two of three from the AL Central leaders. The Rays have won 11 of 13 and are a season-high 10 games over .500.

Chris Iannetta hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the seventh inning and the Colorado Rockies beat the last-place San Diego Padres 7-3 to salvage a split of their four-game series and stay within a half-game of the NL West lead. The Rockies came into the series one-half game behind Arizona before losing the first two games.

Matt Kemp beat the Diamondbacks for the second straight game, hitting a two-run double in the ninth inning that lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers over Arizona 3-2 for sole possession of first place in the NL West. A day after Kemp's three-run homer in the eighth against Archie Bradley, the Dodgers slugger tagged him again. Kemp's one-out drive put Los Angeles alone atop the division for the first time since Aug. 7. The Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks by identical 3-2 scores three days in a row.

Ronald Acuna Jr. slid headfirst across the plate to score the tiebreaking run in the four-run eighth inning and hit his seventh leadoff homer of the season in the Atlanta Braves' 5-1 win over Pittsburgh. Acuna went 3 for 4, helping the Braves increase their NL East lead over Philadelphia to four games. His first-inning blast tied the Braves franchise record for leadoff homers that Marquis Grissom set in 1996.

James Shields threw six scoreless innings, Tim Anderson and Daniel Palka homered and the Chicago White Sox beat the major league-leading Boston Red Sox 8-0 to split their four-game series. Anderson had three hits for the White Sox, who have won seven of their last 10 games. Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez had two hits apiece for Boston, which had won four of its last five. The Red Sox maintained a 7½ -game lead in the AL East over the New York Yankees. Boston heads to Atlanta to take on the Braves Monday at 1:00 p.m.

Sean Reid-Foley struck out 10 over seven innings and earned his first major league win in pitching the Toronto Blue Jays over the Miami Marlins 6-1. Teoscar Hernandez hit a three-run homer and Luke Maile had three doubles for the Blue Jays. Reid-Foley allowed one run and four hits with one walk in his third major league start.

Jorge Lopez scattered five hits over a career-best seven innings to help the Royals rout Baltimore 9-1 and complete a three-game sweep. The only run Lopez allowed came on Jonathan Villar's homer in the first inning. The Royals pounded David Hess to win for the seventh time in eight games. They finished with 14 hits, their sixth straight game with at least 10.

Javier Baez hit one of three solo home runs off Cy Young candidate Aaron Nola to reach 30 home runs and 100 RBIs, and Jon Lester pitched six shutout innings to continue his mastery of the Phillies and help lead the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs to an 8-0 victory over Philadelphia. Daniel Murphy and Anthony Rizzo also went deep off Nola (15-4), who gave up three home runs in a game for just the second time over 88 starts in his four-year career.

Christian Yelich hit his first career grand slam, Keon Broxton added a three-run homer, and the Milwaukee Brewers earned a series victory with a 9-4 victory over the Washington Nationals. Both Broxton and Yelich homered as part of a seven-run fifth inning. It matched Milwaukee's highest-scoring inning of the season.

Eugenio Suarez's two-run homer off of Bud Norris in the tenth inning lifted the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. After Suarez's 31st of the season, Brandon Dixon hit a solo homer four pitches later as the Reds hit back-to-back homers for the fifth time this season.

Noah Syndergaard pitched a two-hitter for his first career complete game, striking out 11 as the New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants 4-1. Syndergaard made his 81st start in the majors and topped the Giants for the second time in 12 days. He matched his season high for strikeouts, walked one and retired 20 of the final 22 batters.  The Mets travel to Los Angles to take on the Dodgers at 8:10 p.m.

In Other MLB Action:

Boston manager Alex Cora says starting pitchers Chris Sale and David Price could return to the rotation as early as next weekend. For both left-handers, the Red Sox are looking at their next homestand, which begins Friday with three games against Houston before three games against Toronto and a three-game set against the Mets. Sale's been on the disabled list since Aug. 15 for mild inflammation in his left shoulder. Price is recovering from being hit on his pitching wrist by a line drive Wednesday during a game against Miami.

TENNIS

Rafael Nadal is back in the U.S. Open quarterfinals after beating Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. The defending champion will next face No. 9 seed Dominic Thiem (teem). That will be a rematch of Nadal's victory in the French Open final and will be their first meeting not on clay.

The top-ranked Spaniard improved to 8-2 in fourth-round matches in the U.S. Open, rebounding from dropping the tiebreaker in the third set Sunday to break the Georgian's serve twice in the fourth set.

Serena Williams, who is seeded 17th, started fast and finished strong to reach the quarterfinals by beating Kaia Kanepi 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.

Karolina Pliskova reached the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year, beating No. 18 seed Ashleigh Barty 6-4, 6-4.

In other Open action:

Defending champion Sloane Stephens returned to the U.S. Open quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 15 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium. No. 3 Stephens mixed her consistent, defense-to-offense style with the occasionally spectacular shot. Now comes a rematch: She'll face No. 19 Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia, the same person she beat in last year's quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows. Sevastova advanced Sunday by eliminating No. 7 Elina Svitolina 6-3, 1-6, 6-0.

John Isner used a booming serve to reach the quarterfinals by beating Milos Raonic 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Isner, seeded 11th, also defeated Raonic at Wimbledon on the way to a semifinals appearance, his best finish in a Grand Slam. Isner is known for his marathon matches and played another long one in Louis Armstrong Stadium.

NFL

The Patriots announced they have added offensive lineman Cole Croston, backup quarterback Danny Etling, offensive lineman James Ferentz, defensive lineman Trent Harris, wide receiver Riley McCarron, defensive tackle Vincent Valentine, running back Ralph Webb, and cornerback Jomal Wiltz, to their practice squad. A team can carry up to 10 players on their practice squad.

In other NFL news:

John Elway cut ties with his biggest draft bust Sunday when he waived quarterback Paxton Lynch less than 24 hours after including him on the Denver Broncos' 53-man roster. Lynch was jettisoned after the Broncos were awarded quarterback Kevin Hogan off waivers from Washington. Elway once viewed the athletic but raw Lynch as a future franchise quarterback, moving up in the 2016 NFL draft to select the Memphis star with the 26th overall pick in the first round.

The Panthers have placed Matt Kalil on injured reserve with a knee injury, meaning the team's starting left tackle will miss at least eight games. Kalil hasn't played since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on Aug. 21.

The Dallas Cowboys have claimed safety Ibraheim Campbell and center Adam Redmond off waivers to address two positions that need depth because of injuries. Dallas also signed defensive end Charles Tapper to the practice squad a day after waiving the fourth-round draft pick from 2016.

Antonio Gates has re-signed with the Los Angeles Chargers for his 16th season. The Chargers today announced a one-year deal with the 38-year-old tight end, the leading receiver in franchise history.

The Buffalo Bills are shuffling punters by claiming Corey Bojorquez off waivers and releasing Colton Schmidt, who spent four seasons in Buffalo. The Bills also claimed cornerback Ryan Lewis. Both Lewis and Bojorquez had been released by New England.

Defensive linemen Carl Nassib and Jamie Meder were among five players released as the Browns continue their massive roster overhaul. The team also waived offensive lineman Austin Reiter, linebacker Jermaine Grace and defensive back Jeremiah McKinnon.

The Jacksonville Jaguars filled out their practice squad by signing 10 players they cut a day earlier. The most notable additions Sunday were quarterback Tanner Lee, a sixth-round draft pick from Nebraska, undrafted rookie cornerback Quenton Meeks and running back Brandon Wilds.

Miami coach Adam Gase declined to say Sunday whether Brock Osweiler or David Fales will be the backup to quarterback Ryan Tannehill, but says he expects to keep all three quarterbacks all season.

Carson Wentz still hasn't been medically cleared for contact, though Eagles coach Doug Pederson won't rule the quarterback out for the season opener against Atlanta. Pederson says he doesn't want to publicly reveal whether Wentz or Nick Foles would be the starter when the defending Super Bowl champions host the Falcons.

The Browns continued their roster overhaul when they waived five players including defensive linemen Carl Nassib and Jamie Meder. General manager John Dorsey also made five waiver claims.

Jake Rudock is back with the Detroit Lions after being signed to their practice squad. The Lions waived Rudock as they cut their roster down to 53 players by Saturday's deadline. That move paved the way for Matt Cassel to be the team's backup quarterback behind Matthew Stafford.

The New York Giants released backup quarterback Davis Webb. That leaves inexperienced Kyle Lauletta and Alex Tanney behind Eli Manning.

The Chiefs announced the signing of veteran Ron Parker and placed fellow safety Daniel Sorensen on injured reserve amid a series of roster moves that included the signing of their practice squad.

The Oakland Raiders have claimed two offensive linemen off waivers: T.J. Clemmings from Washington and Justin Murray from Cincinnati.

T25 COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Nick Brossette ran for 125 yards with two touchdowns, grad transfer quarterback Joe Burrow won his first college start and No. 25 LSU made an opening statement with a 33-17 victory over No. 8 Miami on Sunday night.

Once the game started, the Hurricanes never really backed the bravado they showed in a feisty exchange of words and some shoving between the teams during warmups about 75 minutes before kickoff.

LSU led 27-3 by halftime after Jacob Phillips returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown.

Miami, which has lost four games in a row since a 10-0 start last season, never got to celebrate with that gaudy turnover chain that comes out when the Hurricanes get a takeaway.

NHL

Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt has been suspended for 20 games for violating the NHL's performance-enhancing substances policy.

Schmidt says in a statement he did not intentionally take a banned substance and "will not accept being labeled a cheater." The Golden Knights say they disagree with the suspension and "firmly believe that the presence of a trace of the banned substance was accidental and unintentional."

PGA

Abraham Ancer of Mexico opened with three straight birdies on his way to a 6-under 65 to take a one-shot lead over a familiar figure going into the final round of the Dell Technologies Championship.

It wasn't Tiger Woods, but the guy playing with him — Bryson DeChambeau, who is coming off a four-shot victory in the first FedEx Cup playoff event and shot 63 on Saturday while playing with Woods for the first time in a tournament. DeChambeau and Tyrrell Hatton (69) were one shot behind.

Ancer was at 13-under 200. Ten players were within four shots of the lead.

NASCAR

Brad Keselowski beat leader Kyle Larson out of the pits with 22 laps to go, then pulled away on a restart to win the Southern 500 and sweep the weekend at Darlington Raceway.

Keselowski took the Xfinity race Saturday when leaders Ross Chastain and Kevin Harvick wrecked late. This time, Keselowski and his crew took advantage on the final caution to move in front with a fast pit stop. Keselowski took care of the rest as he opened a second-and-a-half lead down the stretch.

It was Keselowski's first win of the season and the first time a Team Penske driver has won at Darlington since Bobby Allison in the 1985 Southern 500. Joey Logano, Keselowski's Penske teammate, finished second, and Larson was third.

Larson won the first two stages and led 284 of the 367 laps. Yet, he leaves disappointed with his seventh top-three finish of the season.

INDYCAR

Takuma Sato has snatched a victory at Portland International Raceway by benefiting from yellow flags to cycle his way into the lead.

It is the third IndyCar victory for the Japanese driver and first since he won the Indianapolis 500 last season. Sato won for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

The championship battle was the focus of the first race at Portland in 11 years. Points leader Scott Dixon salvaged what could have been a miserable day by finishing fifth.
