GOLF
Francesco Molinari has earned his first major championship by capturing the British Open at Carnoustie.
Molinari was able to hoist the claret jug after emerging from a crowded pack in a wild final round. He closed with a bogey-free, 2-under 69 for an 8-under total.
Molinari became the first Italian to win a major championship. Americans had won the previous five.
Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Xander Schauffele and Kevin Kisner finished two shots back.
Tiger Woods briefly took the lead in the final round before completing a 71 that left him three shots back.
MLB
The Chicago Cubs cooled off Matt Carpenter and increased their lead in the National League Central.
Jose Quintana worked seven strong innings and Kyle Schwarber belted a tiebreaking, solo homer as the Cubs downed the Cardinals, 7-2. Quintana blanked St. Louis after Yairo Munoz hit an RBI double to put the Redbirds ahead 2-0 in the fourth. Quintana gave up six hits and four walks in helping the Cubs win for the 14th time in 18 games.
Carpenter went 1-for-4 with a single after homering in a team record-tying six straight games. The St. Louis infielder was 9-for-17 with six home runs and 10 RBIs in the series.
Willson Contreras delivered a pair of RBI singles for the Cubbies, who moved 3 1/2 games ahead of the sputtering Brewers.
The Dodgers handed Milwaukee its eighth loss in nine games. Matt Kemp was 3-for-5 with a pair of solo homers and three runs scored as Los Angeles clobbered the Brewers, 11-2.
Chris Taylor drove in three runs to support Alex Wood, who allowed two runs over six innings. Wood and the Dodgers bullpen blanked the Brewers on three hits over the final eight innings.
Los Angeles leads the NL West by 1 ½ games over Arizona following the Diamondbacks' 6-1 win over the Rockies. Zack Greinke allowed two hits and struck out a season-high 13 in eight innings as the DBacks ended Colorado's seven-game winning streak. Nick Ahmed had a two-run triple and a bases-loaded walk against the Rockies, who are two games off the NL West lead.
In Other MLB Action:
Former Phillie Freddy Galvis had his second straight three-hit game and Tyson Ross ended a seven-start winless streak as the Padres rolled to a 10-2 win at Philadelphia in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader. Travis Jankowski and Wil Myers each had two RBIs as part of San Diego's 15-hit attack. The Padres reached Nick Pivetta for six runs - four earned - and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The Phillies took the nightcap as Vince Velazquez fired two-hit back while striking out seven over seven innings of a 5-0 shutout of the Padres. Odubel Herrara's fourth-inning homer put the Phils ahead before Rhys Hoskins put the game out of reach with a three-run blast in the seventh. The doubleheader split leads the Phillies with a one-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East.
Max Scherzer worked six innings in his first game since starting for the National League in the All-Star game, helping the Nationals knock off the Braves, 6-2. Scherzer struck out seven and allowed eight hits but just two runs. Bryce Harper hit a solo homer and an RBI single after scoring on Anthony Rendon's two-run triple.
The Red Sox cruised to a 9-1 win at Detroit as Chris Sale struck out nine over six scoreless innings. Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a three-run homer to help Sale improve to 11-4. Andrew Benintendi provided a two-run triple and Eduardo Nunez had two RBIs in the Red Sox's 14th victory in 16 games. The series continues Monday at 7:05 p.m.
Boston's lead in the AL East is up to five games over the Yankees after the Bombers and Mets were rained out in the Bronx. The game has been rescheduled for Aug. 13.
The Yankees head to Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Rays Monday at 7:10 p.m.
The New York Mets will host The San Diego Padres for a three game series starting Monday at 7:10 p.m.
Mike Trout slammed his 26th homer and was one of six different Angels to collect at least two RBIs in a 14-5 dismantling of the Astros. Kole Calhoun was 2-for-3 with a three-run blast for Los Angeles, which also had homers from Justin Upton and Ian Kinsler. Andrew Heaney allowed one run and four hits over six innings as the Angels trimmed Houston's lead in the AL West to five games over Seattle.
Ryon Healy collected a career-high six RBIs with a pair of three-run homers as the Mariners thumped the White Sox, 8-2. Healy went deep in a five-run first and added an eighth-inning blast to give him 20 home runs and 53 RBIs this season. Marco Gonzales won his fourth consecutive start, allowing two runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Jeurys Familia got a victory in his Oakland debut as Marcus Semien scored from second base on Matt Chapman's infield chopper in the 10th inning of the Athletics' 6-5 win against the Giants. Familia worked two scoreless innings for Oakland, one day after being acquired from the Mets. Khris Davis and Matt Olson each homered twice to help the A's stay three games behind Seattle for the second AL wild card.
Cleveland still leads the AL Central by 9 1/2 games after Rougned Odor drove in three runs and Ryan Rua hit a two-run homer in the Rangers' 5-0 shutout of the Indians. Yovani Gallardo and three relievers combined on a five-hitter after the Indians outscored Texas 25-11 in the first two games of the series. Gallardo allowed three hits and four walks in six innings, his longest scoreless outing since August 2015.
Drew Butera hit a tiebreaking, three-run inside-the-park home run in the seventh inning to give the Royals a 5-3 win over the Twins and their first three-game sweep in a year. Butera circled the bases after center fielder Jake Cave failed in his attempt to make a diving catch. Winning pitcher Brad Keller struck out a career-high eight in seven-plus innings, allowing three runs and three hits.
The Pirates earned their ninth consecutive win as Corey Dickerson and Starling Marte hit consecutive homers off Matt Harvey in a 9-2 drubbing of the Reds. Dickerson homered for the fifth time in four games and went 4-for-5 and finished the series with 21 total bases, helping the Pirates outscore Cincinnati 27-5 in the series. Gregory Polanco and Sean Rodriguez also went deep to back Ivan Nova, who held the Reds to two runs over 6 2/3s.
Yangervis Solarte hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning to cap the Blue Jays' rally from a three-run deficit in a 5-4 win over the Orioles. Toronto trailed 4-1 before Randal Grichuk's two-run homer off Brad Brach in the eighth. The Jays completed a three-game sweep and improved to 9-1 versus Baltimore this year.
The Rays pulled out a stunning 6-4 win over the Marlins on pinch-hitter Daniel Robertson's walk-off grand slam with two out in the ninth. Kyle Barraclough allowed three straight hits in the ninth, including Ji-Man Choi's RBI single. Tampa Bay right-hander Chris Archer allowed four runs but had 13 strikeouts in six innings.
Elsewhere in the Majors:
Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard is headed back to the disabled list after contracting hand-foot-and-mouth disease.
The team figures it's likely Syndergaard caught the contagious virus when he made an appearance at a baseball camp for kids last Thursday during the All-Star break. Mets manager Mickey Callaway said that probably explains why Syndergaard weakened and his velocity decreased during Friday night's victory at Yankee Stadium.
Syndergaard just returned from the disabled list July 13 after being sidelined for more than six weeks with a strained ligament in his right index finger. He is 6-1 with a 2.89 ERA in 13 starts this year.
Nationals All-Star closer Sean Doolittle doesn't have a timetable for his return as he tries to overcome soreness in his left foot. Doolittle hasn't pitched in a game since July 6 due to toe inflammation. He threw off a mound Friday and had an MRI the following day that revealed a stress reaction, comparable to a bone bruise. Doolittle is 3-2 with a 1.45 ERA and has converted 22 of 23 save chances.
The Nats shipped outfielder Brian Goodwin to the Royals for minor league pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan. Goodwin is batting .200 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 48 games for the Nationals this season.
NFL
The New York Giants have signed rookie first-round pick running back Saquon Barkley to a contract.
The No. 2 overall selection from Penn State rushed for 3,843 yards and 43 touchdowns in three seasons with the Nittany Lions. He had 5,538 total yards on 791 touches for averages of 7.0 yards per play and 145.7 yards per game.

Titans’ linebacker Kevin Dodd was placed on the "did not report" list. Quarterbacks, rookies and injured players reported ahead of the rest of the team coming Wednesday. Linebacker Rashaan Evans, the team's top draft pick, was out with a "non-football illness."
The Vikings say offensive line coach Tony Sparano died Sunday at the age of 56. The team did not give a cause of death. Sparano began his NFL coaching career in 1999 and had stints as a head coach with the Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders. He was the Dolphins' head coach from 2008-11 and went 29-32. He went 11-5 and won the AFC East in his first season with the Dolphins.
NHL
The NHL has announced that an arbitrator has awarded Winnipeg Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba a one-year, $5.5-million contract for next season. The Jets have 48 hours to accept the ruling or turn it down and make Trouba an unrestricted free agent.
Trouba was one of five restricted free agents on the Jets to file for arbitration earlier this month. He had three goals and 24 points with a plus-9 in 55 games for Winnipeg last season.
NASCAR
Kevin Harvick used a bump-and-run on Kyle Busch with seven laps left to win NASCAR's Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Harvick aimed his Ford bumper at the right side of Busch's Toyota and nudged the leader out of the way for the move of the race.
Harvick raced to his sixth victory of the season and went 1-2 in some order with Busch for the ninth time this year. Busch has five wins and Martin Truex Jr. still has four after finishing fourth.

Lewis Hamilton has regained the Formula One championship lead in unexpected and dramatic fashion, winning the German Grand Prix after Sebastian Vettel crashed while leading near the end.
Heavy rain played havoc late on at the track as Vettel misjudged a basic entry into a turn and slid over the gravel into the barriers with 15 laps to go. Hamilton was fourth at the time of the crash, having started from 14th on the grid because of a hydraulic problem in qualifying.
