Colin Kaepernick has a new deal with Nike, even without having a job in the NFL.
Kaepernick's attorney, Mark Geragos, made the announcement on Twitter, calling the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback an "All American Icon" and crediting attorney Ben Meiselas for getting the deal done. Kaepernick also posted a Nike ad featuring his face and wrote: "Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything. #JustDoIt"
Kaepernick already had a deal with Nike that was set to expire, but it was renegotiated into a multi-year deal to make him one of the faces of Nike's 30th anniversary "Just Do It" campaign, according to a person familiar with the contract. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Nike hasn't officially announced the contract.
The source says Nike will feature Kaepernick on several platforms, including billboards, television commercials and online ads. Nike also will create an apparel line for Kaepernick and contribute to his Know Your Rights charity.
Last week, Kaepernick scored a legal victory in his grievance against the NFL and its 32 teams when an arbitrator denied the league's request to throw out the quarterback's claims that owners conspired to keep him out of the league because of his protests of social injustice. Kaepernick began his kneeling during the national anthem in the 2016 season and was not with an NFL team last year.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson says Nick Foles will start against the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night. Carson Wentz still hasn't been medically cleared for contact as he comes back from surgery last December to repair two torn ligaments in his left knee. Foles was the Super Bowl MVP in Philadelphia's 41-33 win over New England. Wentz didn't play in the preseason and only recently returned to full practice.
Sam Darnold will start at quarterback in the Jets' season opener at Detroit on Monday night. The 21-year-old Darnold will be the youngest quarterback to start in Week 1 since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.
The Bills have named Nathan Peterman their starting quarterback in a job the second-year player is expected to hold until rookie first-round pick Josh Allen is deemed ready. Peterman put up Buffalo's best passing numbers during the preseason, 33 of 41 for 432 yards with three touchdowns and an interception in two preseason games.
Royce Freeman is set to become the first rookie running back to start a season opener for the Denver Broncos since Hall of Famer Terrell Davis in 1995. Coach Vance Joseph has chosen the third-round pick from Oregon as his starter ahead of veteran Devontae Booker and fellow rookie Phillip Lindsay.
MLB
The Dodgers fell into second place by losing to the Mets for the first time in 13 meetings since May 2016. Brandon Nimmo launched a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the ninth inning to send the Mets past L.A., 4-2.
Jacob deGrom received another no-decision despite providing an RBI single that tied the game in the sixth. DeGrom has a 1.68 ERA after limiting the Dodgers to one run over six innings. The series continues Tuesday at 10:10 p.m.
The Colorado Rockies are the new leaders in the National League West, moving a half-game ahead of Los Angeles and 1 ½ games in front of Arizona.
The Rockies coughed up a five-run lead before pinch-hitter Noel Cuevas provided a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth inning to lift Colorado past the Giants, 9-8. Trevor Story hit two homers off Giants ace Madison Bumgarner while the Rockies built a 7-2 advantage.
Colorado had a 7-5 lead in eighth until Giants pinch-hitters Alen Hanson and Chris Shaw hit back-to-back homers to put San Francisco ahead.
The Padres knocked off the Diamondbacks, 6-2 as Franmil Reyes drove in four runs with a pair of homers. Reyes put San Diego in front for good with a three-run blast in the second inning.
Bryan Mitchell went five innings and allowed a run and two hits in his first start since landing on the disabled list with a right elbow impingement.

Christian Yelich beat out a potential inning-ending, double-play grounder in the bottom of the ninth to complete the Brewers' 4-3 victory over the Cubs. Mike Moustakas tied it with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth, a half-inning after Anthony Rizzo's two-run homer put the Cubs ahead 3-2. The Cubs' lead in the NL Central now sits at four games over the Brewers and 5 1/2 games over St. Louis.
The Cardinals blew a 3-1 lead in the ninth and suffered a 4-3 loss at Washington on Bryce Harper's sacrifice fly. Harper also extended the game with a two-run blast off Bud Norris. Nationals starter Max Scherzer leads the majors with 260 strikeouts after fanning 11 over seven innings.
Atlanta's lead in the NL East remains four games over Philadelphia after Jose Urena worked seven sparkling innings to lead the Marlins' 3-1 win against the Phillies. Urena limited Philadelphia to four hits and tossed shutout ball following Asdrubal Cabrera's second-inning homer. Rafael Ortega provided a tiebreaking, two-run single in a three-run second as Miami dealt the Phils their third straight loss and 11th in their last 15 games.
Ian Kinsler had three RBIs and the Red Sox moved 8 ½ games ahead of the Yankees in the AL East by thumping the Braves, 8-2. The Braves closed within 3-2 before Kinsler delivered a two-out, two-run single in the eighth following a throwing error by first baseman Freddie Freeman. Xander Bogaerts added a two-run double in the ninth. The series continues Tuesday at 7:35 p.m.
Mark Canha homered and Matt Chapman furnished the tiebreaking, RBI double in the Athletics' 6-3 win over the Yankees. Trevor Cahill worked five innings before Oakland's bullpen completed four frames of hitless relief. The A's stayed 2 ½ games behind the AL West-leading Astros and climbed within 4 ½ games of the Yankees for the first AL wild card. The pair face off again Tuesday at 10:05 p.m.
Dallas Keuchel combined with four relievers on an eight-hitter as the Astros picked up their third consecutive win, 4-1 against the Twins. Keuchel was reached for five hits over six innings and blanked Minnesota until Miguel Sano's RBI single in the sixth. Alex Bregman and Yuli Gurriel hit solo homers for the Astros, who are 10-3 since falling into a first-place tie with Oakland on Aug. 20.
Dee Gordon's sacrifice fly in the fifth broke a 1-1 deadlock in the Mariners' 2-1 verdict over the Orioles. Erasmo Ramirez pitched into the sixth and combined with four relievers on a three-hitter, blanking Baltimore after Jonathan Villar's fourth-inning blast. Edwin Diaz struck out the side in the ninth for his major league-leading 52nd save, helping the Mariners stay 5 ½ games behind Oakland for the second AL wild card.
The Indians dropped their third in a row as Jakob Junis fired seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball in the Royals' 5-1 win against the AL Central leaders. Ryan O'Hearn homered twice for Kansas City, which also received longballs from Jorge Bonifacio and Hunter Dozier. Francisco Lindor ended the Royals' shutout bid in the ninth with his 30th home run.
The Rays are 12-2 in their last 14 games after Yonny Chirinos tossed seven innings of one-run relief in a 7-1 win at Toronto. Matt Duffy lined a two-run double. Jo-Man Choi homered and Kevin Kiermaier was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman was roughed up in his first start since coming off the disabled list, allowing four runs and six hits in 1 2/3 innings.
The Angels knocked off the Rangers, 3-1 as Matt Shoemaker pitched five scoreless innings in his first start for Los Angeles in more than five months. Shoemaker had missed 134 games since going on the disabled list because of a right forearm strain after his first start of the season March 31. Taylor Ward's two-run homer was part of a three-run seventh that allowed Taylor Cole to pick up his first big league win.
Trevor Williams scattered five hits while pitching shutout ball over 6 2/3 innings of the Pirates' 5-1 win over the Reds. Adam Frazier put Pittsburgh ahead to stay with a solo blast in the first inning and Greg Polanco added a two-run shot in the sixth, both coming off Matt Harvey.
The White Sox homered twice in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Tigers, 4-2. Daniel Palka's solo blast tied it before Matt Davidson's two-run shot gave Chicago' its eighth victory in 10 games.
Judge swings from tee:
Yankees slugger Aaron Judge took his first swings off a tee since breaking his right wrist July 26.
The reigning AL Rookie of the Year took 25 dry swings in Oakland's center-field cage before taking another 25 off the tee at what he called 100 percent effort. He said he felt good enough in recent days that the decision was made he would begin hitting again.
Judge and the Yanks are hoping he can be activated in a couple of weeks.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia is hopeful Shohei Ohtani will be good to make his next scheduled start Sunday. The two-way player lasted only 2 1/3 innings at Houston on Sunday night in his first game on the mound since June 6 because of an elbow strain.
Adam Wainwright is set to pitch for the Cardinals for the first time in nearly four months when he starts next Monday against the Pirates. Wainwright has not pitched since May 13 because of right elbow inflammation. Wainwright is 1-3 with a 4.00 ERA but has made only four starts in 2018 and just one since April 17.
Rockies left-handed reliever Mike Dunn says he is planning on having season-ending shoulder surgery. Dunn has been on the disabled list since July 7 with discomfort in the AC joint.
TENNIS
The U.S. Open will continue without Roger Federer.
The five-time champion and second seed was stunned by 55th-ranked John Millman, falling 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, 7-6 in the fourth round. Federer led 7-6 in the third-set tiebreaking before Millman picked up three straight points to take control of the match.
Federer had 12 aces but also recorded 12 double faults in failing to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2013. It's the first time Federer has lost at Flushing Meadows to a man ranked outside the top 50.
Next up for Millman is a quarterfinal meeting with two-time champion Novak Djokovic. The sixth-seeded Djokovic needed a medical timeout before completing a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory over 68th-ranked Joao Sousa of Portugal.
Seventh seed Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori also moved into the men's quarters by winning in straight sets.
Madison Keys has moved into the women's quarterfinals for the second straight year.
The 2017 finalist earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Dominika Cibulkova and will next face Carla Suarez Navarro, who was a 6-4, 6-3 winner against Maria Sharapova during the night session.
Sharapova had been 22-0 under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The 14th-seeded Keys has reached at least the quarterfinals in three of the four Grand Slams this year. She had six aces and no double faults Monday in perhaps her best performance of the tournament.
Naomi Osaka and Lesia Tsurenko advanced to the women's quarters with three-sets victories.
T25 FOOTBALL
Florida State's first football game under coach Willie Taggart looked much like the Seminoles' last game under Jimbo Fisher.
Josh Jackson was 16 of 27 for 207 yards and two touchdowns as 20th-ranked Virginia Tech whipped the No. 19 Seminoles, 24-3 at Tallahassee. Jackson opened the scoring 4:26 into the game with a 10-yard scoring strike to Damon Hazelton. Jackson capped the rout with a 49-yard TD toss to Eric Kumah, who had four receptions for 86 yards.
FSU fumbled on its opening possession, missed a 32-yard field goal try and had a blocked punt that was returned by Kumah for a touchdown.
The Seminoles are 7-7 since the start of last season.
PGA
Bryson DeChambeau has become just the second player to win the opening two FedEx Cup playoff events.
He has followed last weekend's four-shot victory by finishing two shots ahead of Justin Rose at the Dell Technologies Championship near Boston. DeChambeau closed with a 4-under 67 for a 16-under total as he tries to gain a captain's pick for the U.S. Ryder Cup roster.
Captain Jim Furyk will announce the rest of his roster on Tuesday.
