MLB STANTON

The New York Yankees have acquired NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins.

The Yankees announced the trade Monday, getting the slugger and cash from Miami for Starlin Castro and two minor leaguers, right-hander Jorge Guzman and infielder Jose Devers.

Stanton is still owed $295 million over the final decade of his record $325 million, 13-year contract. The outfielder was to be introduced later Monday at baseball's winter meetings.

The 28-year-old Stanton led the majors with 59 home runs and 132 RBIs last season.

The 27-year-old Castro was an All-Star last season, hitting .300 with 16 homers and 63 RBIs. There's speculation the Marlins will try to trade him to the New York Mets.

The 21-year-old Guzman was 5-3 with a 2.30 ERA in Class A Staten Island. The 18-year-old Devers hit .245 in the Dominican Summer League and the rookie Gulf Coast League.

NFL-PATRIOTS-DOLPHINS

Tom Brady was intercepted twice by Xavien Howard and was held without a third-down conversion Monday night, as the Miami Dolphins snapped the New England Patriots' eight-game winning streak with a surprising 27-20 victory.

The Dolphins (6-7) were 11-point underdogs at home, but they kept the Patriots (10-3) from clinching their ninth consecutive AFC East title — at least for another week.

Brady went 24 for 43 for 233 yards and one touchdown. Miami sacked him twice and hit him five times, and held the Patriots to 25 yards rushing. New England was 0 for 11 on third down.

The Dolphins' Jay Cutler threw for 263 yards and three scores, including two to Jarvis Landry. Kenyan Drake had 114 yards rushing and 79 receiving.

A Brady touchdown pass cut the deficit to 10 points with 13 minutes left, but the Patriots' next three possessions netted 5 yards. After a New England field goal, Miami sealed the victory, recovering an onside kick with 53 seconds to go.

The Dolphins wore the uniforms from their perfect 1972 season and looked the part. For the first time in four prime-time appearances this season, they rose to the occasion.

NFL-EAGLES-WENTZ HURT

— The Philadelphia Eagles will have to compete the rest of the season and in the playoffs without their quarterback, Carson Wentz. Coach Doug Pederson confirmed Monday that the star quarterback has a torn left ACL.

Wentz is a favorite in the NFL MVP race. He had an MRI on Monday that confirmed the severity of the injury. Wentz was hurt late in the third quarter at Los Angeles on Sunday. Backup Nick Foles rallied the Eagles (11-2) to a win that secured the NFC East title and put them in first place in the conference with three games remaining.

The Eagles have overcome several key injuries and now have to move forward without their most indispensable player. Nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters, return specialist/running back Darren Sproles, star linebacker Jordan Hicks and special-teams captain Chris Maragos already went down for the season.

NBA-WARRIORS-BLAZERS

Kevin Durant had 28 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots, leading the short-handed Golden State Warriors past the sluggish Portland Trail Blazers 111-104 on Monday night.

Klay Thompson overcame a cold shooting start to score 24 points as Golden State played without two-time MVP Stephen Curry, who is nursing a sprained right ankle and missed his third straight game. Draymond Green sat out with a sore right shoulder while starting center Zaza Pachulia was sidelined for his second game in a row because of soreness in his left shoulder.

Damian Lilliard scored a season-high 39 points for Portland with five 3-pointers playing back home in Oakland. He hit a 3-pointer late in the first half with Durant in his face and pumped his arm to celebrate.

Durant, who earned Western Conference Player of the Week honors on Monday, shot 11 for 21 and Nick Young contributed 12 points in 13 minutes off the bench before leaving with a concussion in the third quarter.

In other games:

— Nikola Mirotic scored 24 points, Bobby Portis added a career-high 23 and the Chicago Bulls blew out Boston 108-85 tonight with Celtics star Kyrie Irving sidelined because of a bruised left quadriceps. The Bulls, who have the NBA's worst record, built an 18-point lead in the second quarter against the Eastern Conference leaders. And when Boston cut it to 12 in the fourth, the Bulls simply pulled away for their third straight win.

—Clint Capela had a career-high 28 points and James Harden scored 12 straight points for Houston in the fourth quarter as the Rockets rallied for a 130-123 victory to extend their winning streak to 10 games. The game was tied with about three minutes remaining after Harden made two free throws. Those were the first of seven straight points by Harden that put Houston's up 124-119 with 1:30 left.

—Dwight Howard scored 23 points to help the Charlotte Hornets beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 116-103. Kemba Walker had 19 points for the Hornets, who had lost seven of eight. Marvin Williams scored 18, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist finished with 17 points. It was Charlotte's second road win of the season in 12 tries.

— Montrezl Harrell scored 17 points and the Los Angeles Clippers rallied over the final 3:21 to beat Toronto 96-91 and snap the Raptors' six-game winning streak. DeAndre Jordan had 14 points and 17 rebounds for the Clippers. Their bench outscored Toronto's reserves 50-17.

— Goran Dragic scored 19 points, and the Miami Heat pulled away from the lowly Memphis Grizzlies for a 107-82 victory Monday night. Miami shot 56.1 percent from the field and had seven players score in double figures in its second straight win. Memphis lost for the 15th time in 16 games.

NHL-CAPITALS-ISLANDERS

Jaroslav Halak made 31 saves after getting a vote of confidence from his coach, and the New York Islanders beat the Washington Capitals 3-1 to snap a five-game winless streak.

Brock Nelson, Andrew Ladd and John Tavares scored goals for the Islanders, who built a 3-0 lead early in the second period and ended Washington's four-game winning streak.

It was the second time this season that Halak held an opponent to a single goal and the third time New York has allowed one goal as a team. Halak's strong performance came after coach Doug Weight sternly defended his goaltenders following the team's skate Monday morning. New York was 0-3-2 over its last five games.

Elsewhere in the NHL:

__Jonathan Bernier stopped 39 shots and Mark Barberio scored in the third period, helping the Colorado Avalanche top the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1.Blake Comeau added an empty netter against his former team as Colorado won its second straight after a string of six losses in seven games.

— Jason Spezza scored in the shootout, and the Dallas Stars snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating the New York Rangers 2-1. Kari Lehtonen made 24 saves for Dallas in the opener of its four-game East Coast road trip against the Metropolitan Division. Julius Honka scored in the second period.

—Mike Matheson scored his first goal of the season and the Florida Panthers won in overtime for the first time this season, taking a 2-1 decision from the Detroit Red Wings. Matheson drove the rebound into the net behind Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard at the 2:02 mark of the overtime period for the winner.

— Mathieu Perreault scored two goals and added an assist to help the Winnipeg Jets halt a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. The win was the Jets' seventh straight victory at home and they have points in their last 11 games (10-0-1) at Bell MTS Place. The Canucks have lost three straight in regulation for the first time this season.

— Logan Shaw had a goal and an assist, and Jakob Silfverberg returned from a five-game injury absence to score the tiebreaking goal late in the second period of the Anaheim Ducks' 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night. Derek Grant also scored and John Gibson made 28 saves for the Ducks, who won for just the third time in 11 games.

MLB-WINTER MEETINGS

No matter how much their fans imagined Giancarlo Stanton bashing balls over the Green Monster, the Boston Red Sox never came close to getting the NL MVP.

But does anyone really expect the Red Sox or the Cubs and other top contenders to stand still after seeing the slugger join the dreaded New York Yankees?

Dave Dombrowski, Boston's president of baseball operations, says the team is "looking for a middle of the order bat. That hasn't changed. First base or DH."

A couple of big hitters just happen to be available, too.

J.D. Martinez, who launched four home runs in a game for Arizona last season, is a free agent. So is Eric Hosmer, coming off a career year in Kansas City.

Perhaps the Chicago Cubs think bopper Kyle Schwarber might fit better somewhere else. The Cubs already seems to have a target at the swap-and-sign gathering in Florida: pitcher Alex Cobb, who could possibly take Jake Arrieta's spot in the rotation for the NL Central champs.

LOCAL MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Hartford defeated Sacred Heart 86-72.

Vermont topped Siena 81-57.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL POLL

Villanova is the new No. 1 in the AP Top 25 while Arizona State made a big leap after a tumultuous week in which half of the top 10 lost.

The Villanova Wildcats (10-0) were fourth but earned 41 of 65 first-place votes to hop over Michigan State, which earned 19 first-place votes to climb from third to second. They were the favorites to take over at the top following unanimous No. 1 Duke's weekend loss at Boston College.

Wichita State climbed three spots to No. 3, followed by Duke and Arizona State. The Sun Devils (9-0) jumped 11 spots and earned the other five first-place votes after winning at then-No. 2 Kansas to extend their best start since the 1974-75 season.

The Jayhawks fell to No. 13 after two losses.

Unbeaten Miami climbed four spots to No. 6, followed by North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Xavier to round out the top 10.

WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL POLL

Tennessee moves back into the top 10 after a big win while UConn continues to be No. 1 in The Associated Press women's basketball poll.

The Lady Vols (10-0) knocked off then-No. 2 Texas on Sunday and climbed four spots to seventh in the Top 25 on Monday. Tennessee, which was a perennial top team in the sport, hasn't been among the first 10 teams in the poll since Nov. 30, 2015. The Longhorns dropped six spots to eighth.

Both teams are chasing the Huskies (8-0), who routed DePaul in their only game this past week. UConn received all 32 first place votes from a national media panel. The Huskies, like many other teams, are off for exams this week.

Notre Dame, Louisville, Mississippi State and South Carolina follow UConn. Baylor, Tennessee, Texas, Oregon and West Virginia round out the first 10.

Iowa (10-1) entered the Top 25 for the first time since 2015, coming in at No. 25. Kentucky fell out.
