NFL:
The City of Brotherly Love is celebrating its first Super Bowl victory, and its first NFL championship since 1960.
The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champs after rallying to beat the New England Patriots, 41-33. The Patriots led 33-32 until Nick Foles threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Zach Ertz with 2:21 remaining. Tom Brady fumbled on the next possession to set up Jake Elliott's 46-yard field goal that put the Eagles ahead by eight with 1:10 left.
Philadelphia quarterback Nick Foles was named the MVP of the Super Bowl after completing 28 of his 43 passes for 373 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in the Eagles' 41-33 win over New England. Foles joined Bob Griese, Doug Williams and Jeff Hostetler as quarterbacks to win Super Bowls after starting no more than five games during the regular season. He helped the two teams set an NFL playoff record with 1,153 total yards, 505 coming off the arm of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
The Indianapolis Colts say linebacker Edwin Jackson was one of two men killed when a suspected drunken driver struck them as they stood outside their car along a highway in Indianapolis. The Colts said in a statement Sunday that the team is "heartbroken" by Jackson's death. The statement says the 26-year-old "was loved by all in the Colts organization." State police identified the victims as Jackson and 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe, of Avon, Indiana. Authorities say the driver that struck them before dawn on Sunday tried to flee on foot but was quickly captured. Toxicology results are pending.
NBA:
Al Horford nailed a 15-footer at the buzzer to give the Boston Celtics a 97-96 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. Horford finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds in leading Boston to its fourth consecutive win. The Celts trailed 85-79 midway through the fourth quarter before scoring 11 straight points.
Kent Bazemore's 3-pointer with 6.7 seconds left lifted the Atlanta Hawks to a 99-96 win over the New York Knicks. The Hawks rallied from a 93-87 deficit in the final 2:16. Bazemore was wide open in the left corner and hit for a 98-96 lead.
Eric Bledsoe scored 28 points, John Henson had 19 points and 18 rebounds, and the Milwaukee Bucks easily extended their winning streak over the Brooklyn Nets to 10 games with a 109-94 victory. Giannis Antetokounmpo left with an apparent right ankle injury in the fourth quarter, but by then the Bucks were in control of a game they led by as much as 28 points.
Delon Wright led the Toronto Raptors' balanced attack with 15 points in a 101-86 win against the Memphis Grizzlies. DeMar DeRozan and Fred VanVleet each scored 13 for the Raptors, who remain two games behind the first-place Boston Celtics in the NBA's Atlantic Division. The Raptors improved to a league-best 21-4 at home despite shooting 6-for-35 from 3-point range.
NCAA:
De'Andre Hunter scored 15 points, Kyle Guy added 14 and second-ranked Virginia smothered struggling Syracuse 59-44. Virginia has won 14 straight and is off to its best start in conference play since the days of Ralph Sampson, who led the 1980-81 team to a 12-0 start. Syracuse shot 37 percent and its 44 points were its fewest ever in the Carrier Dome.
Deyshonee Much scored 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the 3-point line and Iona took control early and cruised to a 98-64 win over Marist. E.J. Crawford hit 4 of 7 treys and scored 18 points for the Gaels (15-9, 9-3 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference), who made 15 of 28 3s and shot 54 percent overall (36 of 67).
Stevie Jordan had 18 points and six assists, Dimencio Vaughn added 16 points with four steals and Rider beat Quinnipiac 74-59 for its sixth straight victory. Rider (17-7, 10-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) sits alone atop the conference with Canisius (9-2) and Iona (9-3) on its heels.
Top-ranked Villanova won its ninth in a row and improved to 22-1 overall by whipping Seton Hall, 92-76. Omari Spellman had 26 points, 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, while teammate Michael Bridges added 17. The Pirates led by three early in the second half until Eric Paschall (PAS'-kul) and Jalen Brunson drained 3-pointers, igniting a run that allowed the Wildcats to go up by 21 with 2:22 remaining.
In women’s college football:
Asia Durr scored 27 points, Myisha Hines-Allen added 19 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 4 Louisville beat Syracuse 84-77. It was the 13th straight road win for the Cardinals, whose last road loss was an 85-66 setback at Notre Dame a year ago. Syracuse lost its second straight home game.
NHL:
Jordan Eberle and Brock Nelson scored early in the third period and Jaroslav Halak made 46 saves as the New York Islanders rallied for a 4-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Columbus led 3-2 heading into the third after Nick Foligno scored on a breakaway late in the second. Nick Leddy and Josh Bailey also scored for the Islanders, who won for the first time in three games since the All-Star break. They lost the first two by combined 9-1 margin against Florida and Toronto.
Carter Hutton stopped 27 shots, and Carl Gunnarsson banked in a shot off the crossbar with 5:41 left in the St. Louis Blues' 1-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Hutton earned his third shutout of the season and 11th of his career while improving to 9-1-1 in his past 11 games, in which he's allowed just 17 goals. The Sabres lost their third straight and were shut out for the fifth time this season.
Kevin Fiala scored twice and Pekka Rinne stopped 20 shots to lead the Nashville Predators to a 5-2 win over the struggling New York Rangers. P.K. Subban, Colton Sissons and Viktor Arvidsson also scored to help Nashville improve to 8-1-1 in its last 10 games. Rinne has allowed only two goals in his last three games, including shutouts in his previous two outings. He had the Predators' second-longest shutout streak in franchise history at 171:47 before allowing a goal early in the third period.
Predators forward Filip Forsberg has received a three-game suspension from the NHL for his late hit on Rangers forward Jimmy Vesey. Forsberg hit Vesey behind the Rangers net in the second period of the Predators' 5-2 win over New York on Saturday. The league ruled Forsberg committed interference for starting the hit after Vesey had passed away the puck.
Michigan State – Sexual Assault:
Michigan State University faculty are moving ahead with a motion to hold a no-confidence vote on the school's board of trustees. The vote was in response to the board's decision to hire former Gov. John Engler as interim president. Members of the university's Academic Congress overwhelmingly approved a measure Saturday to hold the vote at the Faculty Senate's next meeting. If that vote passes, faculty would call on the trustees to step down immediately. Faculty members say the board rushed to appoint Engler and they criticized his lack of academic experience. Engler was hired as interim president last Wednesday after longtime President Lou Anna Simon resigned Jan. 24. Simon's decision came amid a growing outcry over the university's handling of the sex assault scandal involving former university sports doctor Larry Nassar.
Skiing:
Lindsey Vonn claimed her 81st career victory by capturing the final women's World Cup downhill in Germany before the Pyeongchang Olympics. It was the American's third straight triumph in the discipline after winning on the same hill the day before and in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, two weeks ago. Vonn's American teammate Stacey Cook crashed and was taken off the hill on a sled, but the U.S. ski team says she "is OK." Another teammate, Jacqueline Wiles, damaged her left knee in a crash Saturday and was ruled out of the Olympics.
PGA:
Gary Woodland parred the first playoff hole to beat Chez Reavie and win the PGA's Waste Management Phoenix Open. Woodland birdied three of the last four holes of regulation for a 7-under 64, the best round of the day. He was 18 under for the tournament. Reavie made a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th to force the PGA Tour's fourth straight playoff and the event's third overtime finish in a row. Brendan Steele and Ollie Schniederjans tied for third at 15 under, one shot in front of Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Chesson Hadley and Bryson DeChambeau.
MLB:
Bartolo Colon isn't ready to end his playing career. The Texas Rangers have signed the 44-year-old pitcher to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Colon was a combined 7-14 with a 6.48 ERA in 28 starts for Atlanta and Minnesota last season. The 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner has 240 career victories in 20 seasons with 10 different teams.
Olympics:
North and South Korean figure skaters shared the same ice Monday for the first time at the Pyeongchang Olympics. The North's pair of Ryom Tae Ok and Kim Ju Sik didn't socialize much with the South Korean and Japanese athletes in their practice session, but South Korean skater Alex Kam said they'd shared a few words. "We didn't have much time to talk because our warmup schedule was different, but we just said 'Hi'," Kam said. "We were just talking about our schedule for this weekend."
