DOCTOR-SEXUAL ASSAULT

A judge has sentenced a Michigan sports doctor to 60 years in federal prison for child pornography crimes.

The criminal case was one of three against former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics sports physician Dr. Larry Nassar, who also admits assaulting female gymnasts.

Separately, the 54-year-old has pleaded guilty to molesting gymnasts with his hands in the Lansing, Michigan, area under the guise of treatment. He'll be sentenced in those cases in January.

NFL-FALCONS/SAINTS

The Atlanta Falcons are back in the hunt for the NFC South title after grinding out a win over the New Orleans Saints.

Deion Jones made a leaping interception in the end zone with 1:25 remaining to secure the Falcons' 20-17 win over the Saints. Drew Brees had just marched New Orleans to the Atlanta 11 before Jones allowed Atlanta to improve to 8-5, one game behind the division-leading Saints.

Matt Bryant's 52-yard field goal broke a 17-all tie with 3:49 to play. Matt Ryan was picked off three times but tossed a game-tying, eight-yard scoring pass to Mohamed Sanu 5:05 into the fourth quarter.

Brees threw scoring passes to Tommylee Lewis and Michael Thomas, but the Saints were held to 50 yards on 15 carries. Alvin Kamara ran the ball just once for two yards before leaving the game with a concussion.

Carolina will move into a tie with the Saints if the Panthers beat the Vikings in Charlotte on Sunday.

NFL-NEWS

The Cleveland Browns have fired top executive Sashi Brown, but are keeping coach Hue Jackson for another season despite a 1-27 record since he took over last year.

Brown has been replaced by former Kansas City GM John Dorsey, whose Chiefs went 43-21 and reached the playoffs three times in four seasons from 2013-16.

Brown's firing is not unexpected since Cleveland is 0-12 for the second straight season with Brown in charge. The team passed up a chance to draft quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson in the past two drafts and Cleveland has shown little sign of improvement since Brown took over.

In other NFL news:

— Eagles tight end Zach Ertz remains in the concussion protocol despite returning to practice on a limited basis Thursday. Ertz took a big hit in Philadelphia's loss at Seattle last weekend.

— Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier underwent surgery on Wednesday night in Pittsburgh to stabilize his spine. The 25-year-old suffered the injury while hitting Cincinnati's Josh Malone in the first quarter of Pittsburgh's 23-20 victory over the Bengals on Monday night.

— Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor had limited mobility in his bruised left knee on Thursday while practicing for the first time since being hurt last weekend. Coach Sean McDermott has listed Taylor as day to day.

NBA-SCHEDULE

Joel Embiid scored 33 points on Thursday, while teammate Ben Simmons had a triple-double, but it wasn't enough for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Brandon Ingram capped his 21-point performance by nailing the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds left to give the Lakers a 107-104 win at Philadelphia. Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson each had 16 points for the Lakers, who blew a 16-point lead in the second half before ending a five-game losing skid.

Simmons finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 15 assists for the Sixers. Embiid tied the game by hitting a pair of free throws with 39.8 seconds remaining.

Checking out Thursday's other NBA action:

— The Rockets have an eight-game winning streak after James Harden poured in 29 points and Ryan Anderson added 23 in a 112-101 decision over the Jazz. Chris Paul chipped in 18 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds in helping Houston improve to a Western Conference-leading 19-4.

— Bradley Beal scored 34 points and the Wizards shot 51 percent in beating the Suns 109-99 in Phoenix. Former Sun Markieff Morris had 21 points for Washington, which closed on an 11-3 run to win for the third time in four games.

— The Thunder wasted Russell Westbrook's 31 points, eight boards and six assists in a 100-95 loss to the Nets. Caris Levert dropped in 19 points and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson added 17 in Brooklyn's third win in four games.

NBA-NEWS

The Philadelphia 76ers have parted with disappointing center Jahlil Okafor.

The Sixers are sending the third player taken in the 2015 NBA draft to the Brooklyn Nets. Okafor averaged 17 ½ points and seven rebounds as a rookie during the 2015-16 season, but he's dropped out of the team's rotation this year

The Sixers also sent guard Nik Stauskas and a 2019 second-round draft pick to the Nets for forward Trevor Booker.

Also in the NBA:

— The Pelicans say reserve center Alexis Ajinca has had surgery on his right knee and his recovery is expected to take four to six months. The 7-foot-2 Ajinca has been inactive so far this season while trying to determine if he could rehabilitate patellar tendinitis without surgery.

MLB NEWS

Giancarlo Stanton remains on the Miami Marlins' payroll, although that hasn't stopped the team from beginning its salary dump.

The Marlins have shipped speedster Dee Gordon to the Mariners for three prospects as Miami tries to slash payroll by more than 20 percent to about $90 million. Gordon hit .308 for Miami last season and led the National League in stolen bases for the third time in four years. He won a batting title in 2015 and is a lifetime .293 hitter.

Gordon has been a second baseman much of his major league career, but he's expected to be moved to the outfield by the Mariners due to the presence of eight-time All-Star Robinson Cano.

Miami acquired right-hander and Mariners No. 2 prospect Nick Neidert in the trade, along with infielder Chris Torres and right-hander Robert Dugger. Seattle gets international signing bonus pool allotment, boosting the amount it can offer Japanese star pitcher.

In other MLB news:

— The Cubs have added Tyler Chatwood to their starting rotation by giving the free-agent right-hander a three-year, $38 million contract. Chatwood was 8-15 with a 4.69 ERA in 33 appearances for the Rockies last season, including 25 starts.
