Sports Report: NFL Preseason Start; PGA Championship Continues

Golf:

Ryan Palmer, Lee Westwood and Kevin Chappell are the first-round co-leaders at the PGA Championship, the final major of the PGA Tour season. All shot 6-under 65s. British Open champ Rory McIlroy, Jim Furyk, Henrik Stenson and Edoardo Molinari are lurking just one off the lead.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 1-0 yesterday. Shane Greene pitched into the ninth inning, and then watching closer David Robertson get pinch-hitter Miguel Cabrera to ground into a double play. The Yankees took two of three in games started by the Tigers' Cy Young Award winners with spectacular efforts from their rotation. Elsewhere Baltimore defeated doubled Toronto 2-1, Oakland blanked Minnesota 3-0, and Seattle blew out the White Sox 13-3.

In the National League, Washington beat the Mets 5-3 in 13, the Cubs tripled up Colorado 6-2, Milwaukee bested San Francisco 3-1, and it was Pittsburgh over Miami 7-2.

In interleague play, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Boston Red Sox 5-2 last night. Adam Wainwright recovered from a shaky start to earn his 14th win, and rookie Kolten Wong homered twice. Mike Napoli and Christian Vasquez each drove in a run for the last place Red Sox. Elsewhere Cincinnati blanked Cleveland 4-0, Philadelphia beat Houston 6-5, Kansas City tripled up Arizona 6-2, and it was the Dodgers over the Angels 7-0.

NFL:

In preseason NFL, the New York Jets beat the Indianapolis Colts last night in the preseason opener for both teams. Michael Vick led the Jets on a touchdown drive, capped by fellow newcomer Chris Johnson's 1-yard scoring run. Geno Smith was 4 of 6 for 33 yards in two series with the first-team offense that included a 51-yard field goal by Nick Folk before giving way to Vick.

The Washington Redskins beat the New England Patriots 23-6 in the teams' preseason opener last night. Tom Brady took the night off, and Robert Griffin III played one series. Griffin completed 2 of 4 passes for 9 yards in an 11-play drive that ended with a 39-yard field goal from Kai Forbath. Coach Bill Belichick rested Brady, Darrelle Revis and most of his starters.

Elsewhere Baltimore bested San Francisco 23-3, Kansas City defeated Cincinnati 41-39, Denver slid past Seattle 21-16, and it was San Diego over Dallas 27-7.

Former Buffalo Sabres owner Tom Golisano has entered the running to purchase the Buffalo Bills.

A person familiar with the sale process confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday that Golisano submitted a non-binding bid to the banking firm overseeing the sale. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the sale is private.

NBA:

It looks like LeBron James is getting some considerable help in his bid to give the Cleveland Cavaliers their first NBA title next season. Two people with knowledge of the deal say Minnesota and Cleveland have agreed in principle to a trade that will send Kevin Love to the Cavaliers for Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and a first-round draft pick.

Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant has withdrawn from the U.S. national team, dealing yet another blow to the weakening American team. The NBA's MVP has informed USA Basketball that he is mentally and physically drained from the season.

His withdrawal comes less than a week after Indiana's Paul George was lost to a broken right leg.

MLS:

Landon Donovan says he will retire from professional soccer at the end of the MLS season.

The LA Galaxy forward is widely considered the best soccer player in American history. The 32-year-old Donovan is the top goal-scorer in MLS history and a five-time league champion.

WNBA:

In WNBA, Minnesota bested Chicago 74-64, Phoenix beat San Antonio 78-73 in overtime, and Seattle won against Atlanta 88-68.

NCAA:

The NCAA Board of Directors voted 16-2 on Thursday to allow schools in the top five conferences to write many of their own rules. That could include rules that range from, recruiting rules to insurance benefits for players.
