Sports Report: First D-I NCAA Basketball Player Comes Out As Gay

WAMC

UMass basketball player Derrick Gordon has come out as gay, the first NCAA Division I men's basketball player to do so. In a press conference, Gordon said he was comfortable being a trail-blazing role model.

“... It comes a time when you just don’t want to live that way, and just doing it for four years, I didn’t want to wait ‘til I was 35, 40 years old or when I’m done playing basketball to finally say that I’m gay,” said Gordon.

Gordon said he felt more confident to come out after seeing an NBA team sign Jason Collins, who became the league's first openly gay player when he joined the Brooklyn Nets.

Union College’s Rick Bennett, who guided the skating Dutchmen to this week’s Frozen Four, was named Wednesday as winner of the Spencer Penrose Award as Division I Hockey’s Coach of the Year. Union will see Boston College today at 5 p.m. on ESPN2.
