Pittsfield, Massachusetts wants to build a center for at-risk young women. It’s part of the city’s submission to the Bloomberg Philanthropies 2017 Mayor’s Challenge.

The proposed Life Academy for Young Women would be a residence for homeless and at-risk women between 16 and 21 years old. The center would bring services, resources and mentoring.

Pittsfield Mayor Linda Tyer says it’s a winning proposal.

“A compelling initiative for the city of Pittsfield,” Tyer says, “and what we are proposing speaks to in particular is young women at risk.”

More than 500 cities are competing. 35 will be awarded $100,000 in January; four will get $1 million for concept development. The top prize of $5 million will be awarded by October 2018.
