NYS Senate Passes Rail Crossing Study Bill

WAMC, Allison Dunne

The New York state Senate has passed a bill that would require the study of rail crossings.

The bill, sponsored by Senator David Carlucci, an Independent Democrat, requires the state Department of Transportation to conduct a study of all level grade rail crossings in New York. On May 13, Carlucci and Democrat Tom Abinanti, who sponsored the bill in the Assembly, stood with Alan Brody at the Commerce Street crossing in Valhalla calling for the bill’s Senate passage. In February 2015, a Metro-North train crashed into an SUV that was stopped on the tracks there, killing Alan Brody’s wife Ellen, the car’s driver. Five train passengers also were killed. The Assembly had passed the bill in March. The bill now heads to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office.
