NYS Senate Passes Legislation On Where Sex Offenders May Live

Office of NYS Senator Greg Ball

The New York state Senate Tuesday passed legislation sponsored by a Hudson Valley lawmaker.

Republican Senator Greg Ball sponsored the legislation in March that would prohibit Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders from residing within 1,500 feet of their victims’ homes. Ball says the justification for the bill stemmed from a 2011 article in a local newspaper, The Journal News, about a sex offender in Putnam County who was classified as a Level 3 offender upon his release from prison, and who then moved next door to one of his child victims. Ball says that while he commends the Senate having passed his legislation, he would like to see the state go further and permanently confine such sex offenders. The legislation was sent to the Assembly, where it is sponsored by Democratic Queens Assemblyman Edward Braunstein.
