Newburgh Official Receives EPA Award For Addressing PFOS Contamination

A Newburgh city official has been recognized by the federal Environmental Protection Agency for his handling of the city’s PFOS water contamination.

EPA officials awarded Newburgh City Manager Michael Ciaravino the Environmental Champion Award for his raising the Washington Lake PFOS contamination from a local drinking water issue to a regional watershed contamination issue. EPA Region 2 officials note Ciaravino declared a state of emergency as soon as he learned of the contamination one year ago and since has worked to ensure safe and clean drinking water and access to PFOS blood tests.
