New York is providing $1 million in seed money for new farmers.

Applications are now being accepted for the state's New Farmers Grant Fund, which provides matching grants for farm machinery purchases, construction and other costs associated with building a farm business. Individual grants range from $15,000 to $50,000.

This is the second year of the grant program for farmers in their first 10 years of business; $610,000 has already been awarded to 19 farms in the state.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the statewide grant program helps expand New York's agricultural diversity and production.

Applications are available online through the website for the state's regional economic development councils. The deadline for applicants is Jan. 22.
