New Housing For Veterans Built At Former Police Academy

Soldier On

New permanent housing for homeless military veterans will be dedicated Monday in western Massachusetts.

The former Western Massachusetts Regional Police Academy in Agawam has been redeveloped into housing for 51 veterans in a $14 million project by Soldier On.

The president of the local nonprofit, John Downing, announced the project after the state legislature voted to transfer the building to Soldier On in July 2010.

" This allows us to give them a safe, affordable housing with sustainable energy that they will be able to maintain for the rest of their lives," said Downing.

Soldier On has developed permanent housing for veterans at campuses in Chicopee, Northampton and Pittsfield.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
