New Holyoke Police Chief Is Sworn-In

Holyoke Mayor's Office

A western Massachusetts city has a new police chief.

The new Holyoke Chief of Police Manuel Febo is the first Latino to lead the department.

A Holyoke native, Febo is the first chief to come up through the ranks of the Holyoke Police Department in two decades.

He plans to continue a community policing program initiated by his predecessor that is credited with sharply reducing crime.

" I am very happy with the direction the department has been going in the last seven years and I plan to continue and to expand some of the efforts we already have in place," Febo said after his selection as chief was announced.

Febo’s appointment was announced in May by Mayor Alex Morse.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
