New Commuter Rail Service Between Springfield And New Haven Begins June 16

A new era in train travel begins next week in western Massachusetts and Connecticut with the debut of the long-awaited Hartford Line on June 16th

The weekday schedule has 16 high-speed trains running between Springfield and New Haven, with roughly one train every half-hour during peak commuting times.

In Springfield, the trains will arrive at and depart from Union Station, which re-opened a year ago after a $95 million restoration.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Massachusetts Department of Transportation CEO Stephanie Pollack about the new train service and prospects for expanding passenger rail in Massachusetts.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
