Neal Defeats Democratic Challenger In 1st Massachusetts Congressional District

WAMC

Congressman Richard Neal claimed what he described as a “very substantial” victory Tuesday in the Democratic primary in Massachusetts’ First District.

With no Republican running, the victory all but assures the Springfield Democrat will win reelection to a new term in November.

Neal has represented western and parts of central Massachusetts in Washington for almost 30 years.

Unofficial results had Neal winning almost 70 percent of the vote over Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, a first time candidate.

"We took  this campaign seriously, and I want to thank Ms. Wadud for her candidacy recognizing that it is very hard to put yourself foreward in public life today, " said Neal.

Neal told about 150 supporters in Springfield Tuesday night that he was proud of the campaign he waged and said it continued a streak of no negative campaigning.

" And in terms of not disparaging anybody wouldn't it be great if the occupant in the White House embraced the same philosophy?' Neal said as his supporters applauded.

With no opponent in November, Neal told reporters he will be traveling the country to try to help Democrats capture control of the U.S. House.

If Democrats are in the majority in January 2019, Neal would be in line to chair the powerful Ways and Means Committee.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
