Mental Health Providers To Gain Skills To Help Veterans

There is a two-day program at SUNY New Paltz to train mental health providers to assist veterans and their families.

The Institute for Disaster Mental Health at the State University of New York at New Paltz is hosting a training program Wednesday and Thursday, collaborating for the first time with the Maryland-based Center for Deployment Psychology. The Center trains military and civilian behavioral health professionals to better assist military personnel and their families. Licensed clinicians will gain skills to address Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other reactions. James Halpern is director of the Institute for Disaster Mental Health. He says the training is needed because after more than a decade at war, the nation faces an unprecedented need to address mental health issues among service people and their families.
