Mayor Requests Moment Of Reflection On Tornado Anniversary

Preservation Massachusetts Inc

Saturday marks two years since a powerful tornado tore a 39 mile long path of destruction through western Massachusetts.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno  and the city’s parks department  will host a brunch to honor individuals and organizations for tornado rebuilding efforts.  The mayor has also called for a city-wide moment of reflection at the time the tornado touched down two years ago.

The tornado was the most powerful to hit Massachusets in a half century. It claimed three lives.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
