Massachusetts officials are weighing the pros and cons of legalized sports betting after the U.S. Supreme court gave state’s the green light to consider it.

The legislature’s Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies is considering several bills addressing gaming.

Democratic Senator Eric Lesser of Longmeadow, who is Senate chairman of the committee, said a decision on sports betting needs to happen before the July 31st end of the legislative session.

"Our neighboring states Connecticut and New York are already engaging with legal changes, and we have a huge new casino opening in Springfield August 24th and there will be a lot of impications for them as well," said Lesser.

MGM Springfield issued a statement applauding the court’s decision on sports betting.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
