Mass. Mayors Call on Congress to Reduce Gun Violence

BOSTON (AP) — Mayors from across Massachusetts are calling on Congress to take action to reduce gun-related violence.

More than a dozen mayors from Massachusetts cities met with Boston Mayor Thomas Menino on Thursday to renew their push for tighter gun laws.

Menino also called on the state's newest Senate member to join the state's congressional delegation in fighting for changes to federal gun laws.

On Wednesday, Gov. Deval Patrick appointed his former chief of staff, William "Mo" Cowan, to the seat that will be left vacant when John Kerry leaves office Friday to become the nation's next secretary of state.

Menino said one of his top goals is to require background checks for every gun sale in America.

Menino also recently met with U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren to call for tougher gun laws.
