Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy was among the state and local leaders who met in Washington Tuesday for a gun violence prevention conference.Malloy has been a vocal gun control advocate since the December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Connecticut later passed what are considered some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country.

Malloy, a Democrat, introduced Vice President Joe Biden who told the local leaders to push for universal background checks and gun safety measures although the Obama administration hasn’t seen much success on that front.

“There is a 2nd Amendment,” Biden said. “It’s real. It exists and it must be upheld. And there is a need to significantly decrease the exposure to violence as consequence of the use of a gun in American society.”

Biden says President Obama has implemented 23 executive orders relating to gun violence including increasing school resource officers and expanding mental health benefits.
