Hunger Free Vermont is one of the state’s largest hunger outreach organizations, working with state agencies, schools  and community groups. This week, the non-profit revealed that a bookkeeper has been fired and is being investigated for embezzling from the organization over a 10-year period. The amount of the theft, discovered by the organization’s bank, is expected to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.  As the police and FBI investigate, Hunger Free Vermont decided to let the public know about its plight. Executive Director Marissa Parisi tells WAMC North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley the situation is heartbreaking.
Hunger Free Vermont has created a Phoenix Fund for donations to help restore lost funds.  The employee alleged to have committed the theft has not been identified because charges have not yet been filed.
