Lawmakers Ask U.S. Navy To Name A Ship In City's Honor

New York’s two U.S. Senators and a Hudson Valley congresswoman are urging the secretary of the U.S. Navy to name a ship after a city in Westchester County.

U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Congresswoman Nita Lowey Monday urged the U.S. Navy secretary to have a ship named after the City of White Plains. They point out that White Plains is preparing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its incorporation, as well as the 240th anniversary of the 1776 Revolutionary War’s Battle of White Plains, in 2016, and would be honored to have a ship named “White Plains.” Two previous Navy ships were named “White Plains.” However, they have been decommissioned for years. Schumer, Gillibrand, and Lowey say naming a ship in the city’s honor would be a fitting tribute.
