Lab Tests Find Toxins In Some School Supplies

A consumer group says it tested dozens of school supplies and found some that contain hazardous chemicals.

The vast majority of the markers, glues, three-ring binders, and lunchboxes tested were found to be safe.

However the investigation turned up a brand of crayons with trace amounts of asbestos, markers with benzene, and water bottles with lead.

Janet Domenitz, executive director of the MASSPIRG Education Fund says an online guide recommends what not to buy.

"In fact we have written to some of the retailers who offer these products asking them to take them off the shelves," Domenitz said in an interview Tuesday.

The makers of the school supplies flagged in the report said they were working to independently verify the test results.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
