Officials say the invasive emerald ash borer has been found in the southern Vermont town of Stamford.
The location is within five miles of a location in North Adams, Massachusetts, where the insect was also recently discovered.
Since the pest that can kill ash trees was first found in Vermont in February, its presence has been confirmed in Orange, Washington and Caledonia counties.
Ash trees make up about 5 percent of Vermont's forests and the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation says a widespread infestation "could have significant ecological and economic impacts."
The emerald ash borer was first discovered in North America in 2002 in the Detroit area. It has now been found in 35 states and four Canadian provinces.
