Immigration Policy Proposal Stripped From Massachusetts Budget

WAMC

Language on immigration policy was left out of the compromise state budget the Massachusetts legislature will vote on.

The conference committee report on the state budget produced Wednesday did not include an amendment that would have prohibited a police officer from asking someone about their immigration status and would have restricted state resources from being used for federal immigration enforcement.

Edwardo Samaniego, an immigration rights organizer with the Pioneer Valley Workers Center, said he was very disappointed.

"And today the state of Massachusetts said,'We are not going to move a finger to support the immigrant families of Massachusetts'," Samaniego said.

The immigration policy was included in the Senate version of the budget, but not in the one passed by the House.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
