Even though New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and his running mate Kathy Hochul won the Democratic primary, their opponents fared well in some Hudson Valley counties.
In Dutchess County, nearly 5,400 voters turned out and delivered some 57 percent of the votes to Fordham University Law School Professor Zephyr Teachout, and about the same percentage for her running mate for lieutenant governor, Columbia University Law School Professor Timothy Wu. In Putnam County, 1,645 were cast. Teachout defeated Cuomo by 155 votes. Wu beat Hochul by 111 votes. Teachout and Wu won in Sullivan County -- Teachout with some 66 percent of the votes and Wu with about 62 percent. Ulster County voters also favored Teachout and Wu. Of the more than 6,400 votes, Teachout took nearly 70 percent, and Wu, nearly 69 percent. However, Rockland and Westchester County voters favored Cuomo and Hochul. Cuomo won in Rockland with 65 percent of the about 12,000 votes; Hochul took 63 percent. And more than 27,500 Democrats cast their ballots in Westchester, where Cuomo resides. He secured 62 percent; Hochul, 59 percent. In Orange County, of the nearly 6,700 ballots cast, Cuomo came out on top by five votes, with one ballot outstanding. Hochul secured the win with 207 votes.
