Guardian Angels' Push To Form Albany Chapter Continues

Curtis Sliwa

The Guardian Angels say they'll return to Albany tonight to continue recruitment efforts.

Founder Curtis Sliwa says the group will meet 7:30 at the downtown Greyhound station, where they will train local recruits in making citizen arrests.

"That's exactly what we're gonna be doing as we put together a new chapter of Albany Guardian Angels. And then we simulate street situations. 'What are you going to do if there's a fight or a dispute or a domestic situation?'”

Sliwa says following the drills he and the recruits will head out to patrol the South End. He notes the red berets need at least a dozen recruits to sustain an Albany chapter. City Hall today denied Sliwa's request to meet with Mayor Kathy Sheehan.

Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. Prior to that he hosted talk shows on WYJB and WROW, including the 1999 series of overnight radio broadcasts tracking the JonBenet Ramsey murder case with a cast of callers and characters from all over the world via the internet. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.
