General Electric Gets Approval For New HQ Complex

General Electric has moved a step closer to building its new $200 million headquarters in Boston.

The Boston Globe reports that the city's Planning and Development Agency approved the three-building complex at a meeting Tuesday.

The offices in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood will include a 12-story glass building with a sail-like canopy of solar panels and an illuminated GE logo.

The technology giant announced earlier this year that it was moving to Boston from suburban Fairfield, Connecticut, its home for the last 42 years.

The Boston project is scheduled to break ground next year and open in 2018 but stills needs zoning and environmental approvals. The company now has a temporary headquarters nearby. It's also opened a branch office for its GE Digital division in Providence, Rhode Island.
