Fort Drum To Lose 28 Soldiers Under Troop Reductions

Fort Drum will lose only 28 soldiers as part of broader troop reductions at military installations nationwide.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer's office confirmed the size of the troop reduction Thursday.

Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, whose district includes Fort Drum, said it was incredible news. “I am grateful that the Army has spared this pivotal installation and the 10th Mountain Division from significant reductions in force structure like those seen at other bases across the country.”

Fort Drum is home to more than 19,000 active-duty military personnel, along with nearly 20,000 family members and 4,700 civilian workers.

The Army plans to reduce its active-duty force from 490,000 to 450,000 within two years.

Schumer says the relatively minor cuts at Fort Drum show its importance to the Army's future.
