Do's And Don'ts Of Legalized Marijuana

Recreational marijuana is becoming legal in Massachusetts. Legal, but not readily available.

The ballot question approved by voters Nov. 8 is scheduled to go into effect Thursday if it's certified in time by the state.

Adults 21 or older can possess up to an ounce of marijuana outside the home and up to 10 ounces inside the home. They can also grow up to 12 pot plants per household.

It's still illegal to sell marijuana in Massachusetts — except to registered medical marijuana patients — and will be for at least a year until the first pot shops are licensed and regulated.

A spokesman for RegulateMass, the group that sponsored the ballot question, says states that previously legalized marijuana went through similar transitional periods without major problems.
