CT OK's 4 Schools' Turn-Around Plans

The state Board of Education has approved plans by schools in four Connecticut cities to turn around low-performing schools.

Officials on Thursday accepted the plans from Bridgeport's Curiale School, Hartford's Core Knowledge Academy at Milner School, New Haven's High School in the Community and Norwich's Stanton School.

The legislature established a Commissioner's Network allowing the education commissioner to take steps to turn around 25 low-performing schools. Each school may establish a committee of teachers, parents and administrators to develop plans to turn around their schools and present their proposals to the commissioner.

State education officials say the four schools are in the bottom 10 percent.

Plans for improvement in the four schools include longer days and school years, establishing community-based schooling and launching a summer language immersion program.
