Former Hudson Valley Congressman and New York state Assemblyman Maurice Hinchey died Wednesday at 79 after a public battle with a degenerative brain disease. Known as an environmental champion, Hinchey, a Democrat, served in the Assembly from 1975 until he was elected to Congress in 1992. He remained in the House until 2013, and helped inaugurate WAMC's popular Congressional Corner series, a daily segment that still runs today. WAMC's President and CEO Dr. Alan Chartock called Hinchey a "true friend," and shared his remembrances of the lawmaker with WAMC's Ian Pickus.

Dr. Alan Chartock is professor emeritus at the University at Albany. He hosts the weekly Capitol Connection series, heard on public radio stations around New York. The program, for almost 12 years, highlighted interviews with Governor Mario Cuomo and now continues with conversations with state political leaders. Dr. Chartock also appears each week on The Media Project and The Roundtable and offers commentary on Morning Edition, weekdays at 7:40 a.m.
