Cases Of Mumps At SUNY New Paltz Reach Nine

The number of cases in a mumps outbreak at the State University of New York at New Paltz has reached nine as of Wednesday.

A SUNY New Paltz spokeswoman says eight of the nine students who contracted mumps are on the school’s intercollegiate swim team. The university says the pool in the Elting Gym has reopened after being shut down last week. Members of the swim team are not permitted to use it. Officials say all swim practices and workouts have been suspended out of an abundance of caution to see if anyone else has the mumps. Students who have not been vaccinated for the mumps have been sent home until November 27, per Ulster County Health Department and New York State Health Department guidelines. Transmission of mumps is through close contact
