Becket Firefighters Quickly Put Out Grass Fire, Area Under Brush Fire Alert

Firefighters in Becket, Massachusetts were on the job Wednesday, as the area was under a red flag warning for potential brush fires.Becket firefighters used about 50 gallons of water to put out a grass fire that covered a 10 by 100-foot area off of Jacobs Ladder Road Wednesday morning, according to Becket town administrator Edward Gibson. Gibson says the fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes.

He says a resident with a burning permit who started a separate fire alerted authorities to the grass fire. Gibson says it’s not known how the grass fire started.

Because of dry conditions, low humidity and winds the National Weather Service issued its highest alert for brush fires for much of Wednesday in the Berkshires, eastern New York and Bennington County in Vermont.
