The Massachusetts Attorney General’s office is expected to weigh in on a proposed water rate increase of more than 50 percent in Sheffield.
The average household in Sheffield could pay an additional $320 a year, if the state approves Mountain Water Systems’ 58 percent rate hike.
The New England Service Company subsidiary says it needs roughly $176,000 to cover the costs of upgrading the town’s water system. According to the company’s petition, it has already invested $83,000.
The state attorney general’s office intervened earlier this month to check the company’s estimates.
A public hearing on the proposal is set for January 3rd at 7 p.m. at Mount Everett Regional High School.
